The Government Registered Midwives Group was initially formed under the name Straight Midwives / Enrolled/Community Midwives Group in about 1974 but remained dormant due to the fact that there were no national executive to steer the affairs of the Group. The Group was first launched at Atibie Government Hospital in the Eastern Region in 1974 on Regional basis. By 1980, all regions in the country embraced the concept of forming a national body with the Headquarters in Accra.
However, the Regional Executives maintained their stand of operating on regional level. A re-organisation of the Group was carried out in 2001 with the election of Ms. Justina Aniaku as chairperson with Ms. Rizwana Hawa Amoako-Agyei as Secretary. With the retirement of Ms. Aniaku. Rizwana Hawa Amoako-Agyei was elected as the chairperson in January 2007. In May, 2007, the name Straight Midwives / Enrolled / Community / Diploma Midwives Group was replaced by the name Government Registered Midwives Group. In June 2009, the Group was inducted into the National
Council of the Ghana Registered Nurses Association.
In the meantime, the Group is strengthening its educational aspects by establishing Degree Midwifery programmes to enable Diploma Midwives to specialize in areas of Midwifery. The Group is working hard to promote the practice of Midwifery and to project the profession to meet International Standard properly
